Suzuki has been building The Jimny since 1970s. India got the taste of The Jimny with the SJ410 and later the SJ413 as Maruti Gypsy. Maruti Gypsy is kind of a Cult vehicle in India, from Car rallies, Autocross’s to defending our borders with Armed Forces The Gypsy has done it all. The third generation Jimny never came to India though and the Gypsy is still being manufactured by Maruti for the Government and on order for the civilians.
Lately the interwebz has been buzzing with leaked images and videos of the all-new Fourth Generation Suzuki Jimny. The New Jimny comes in two variants – Jimny and Jimny Sierra. The Sierra variant being the one with the fender flares and broader track and probably feature loaded inside too. We will get to the features part in a bit. The New Jimny brings back the Butch looking Boxy exterior from the Gypsy era(2nd Gen Jimny) this is a complete departure from the cute and feminine looking 3rd Gen Jimny, which never came to India. Some say there are bits of the G-wagen DNA is in The New Jimny Design, we agree.
The overall body design is kept boxy with straight lines and sharp edges, this goes well with the SUV and rugged appeal. Carrying on this design language forward, the wheel arches are also made more squarish in shape. The car will have many elements blacked out like the roof, ORVMs and alloy wheels in addition to the bumpers. This, together with the upright stance and expected off-road capabilities of the car, makes its burly nature more prominent.
Its 2018 and Suzuki has loaded the New Jimny with Projector Headlights with circular turn indicators and Led DRLs, The ORVMs get turn indicators and wide angle mirrors. The best part we feel is the fully covered cabin, providing structural rigidity and theft and dust proofing especially in India. Black front and back bumpers, black roof, black fender flairs and cladding along with 15″ alloy wheels complete the exterior. And yeah the spare wheel is on the rear door…naaice !
Coming to interiors: The interiors are all new, Suzuki’s Smart Play AVN infotainment system holds the central ground. The instrument cluster is quite similar to Gypsy but with a MID screen in the middle. Part sharing between products mean the New Swift’s excellent looking Circular Climate Control System is here too. The Dashboard design is very good and refreshing.
Under the Clamshell bonnet, The New Jimny gets Suzuki’s K15B 1.5L Petrol motor providing 102ps of power and 130nm of torque. This is the same engine speculated to be launched in the New Ciaz and also the New Ertiga. The Jimny gets a Ladder frame chassis with Part time 4X4 system with 4High and 4Low (Allgrip pro) and an offroad friendly recirculating ball type power steering, hill launch assist, hill descent control, brake limited slip differential complete the tech fest. The Suspension is taken care of by coil springs at both ends and the three-link rigid rear axle is designed for hard-core off-roading duties
Talking about safety, unlike the Gypsy which had no airbags/abs etc, Jimny is loaded with safety tech, Because it’s 2018 and Because of regulations. The Leaked brochure shows 6 airbags in total and ABS/EBD/ESP/Brake Assist and traction control as standard. Autonomous emergency braking along with lane departure warning system is also present but don’t get your hopes up expecting them to come to India.
Now Since India is Suzuki’s biggest market and revenue earner, Suzuki must bring the New Jimny to India. The Powertrain and Transmission all are already being manufactured in India. The Indian Armed Forces and the Government itself will take up The New Jimny in Large number. Being a Sub-4meter SUV or should we say CUV, Jimny should be a riot in the urban jungle too.
